Exploring the Flavors of Gloria's Home-Grown Lettuces

One of the most exciting things about growing my own produce with my Gardyn (affectionately named Gloria) is the ability to taste fresh, homegrown greens that are nothing like what you find in the grocery store. Recently, I conducted a taste test of the different types of lettuce that came with my original Gardyn (plus the two I added...), and the results were both surprising and delicious! Here’s what I discovered:

Red Salad Bowl – This variety has a mild, sweet flavor that makes it a great base for any salad. It’s not super crunchy, but its delicate texture blends well with other greens.

Flashy Lettuce – With its speckled appearance, this lettuce has a mild, neutral flavor. I detected a slightly peppery aftertaste, but it wasn’t overpowering. The only downside? It lacks crunch.

Butterhead – I had two completely different Butterhead plants! One had reddish leaves with a peppery, slightly bitter taste and a decent crunch. The other was a beautifully flavored green with a soft crunch that was absolutely delicious.

Breen – A crunchy and sweet variety with a fairly neutral flavor and just a hint of bitterness. It’s a bit bolder than Romaine but serves as a great replacement for it.

Monte Carlo – This was my absolute favorite! The dark green leaves are firm, crunchy, and sweet. I believe it’s in the Romaine family, but it stands out with its fresh, crisp texture.

Buttercrunch – Similar in flavor to Breen but without as much bitterness. It has a firm, crunchy texture with a mild, sweet taste that makes it a great all-purpose green.

Iceberg – This one was a total game-changer! It’s incredibly crunchy with a sweet, neutral flavor. The burst of juicy crunch is nothing like the watery iceberg you get at the grocery store. A must-have as a salad base!

Romaine – A classic favorite with an earthy, sweet crunch. I’m not sure if it’s still my number one choice, though, because mixing all of these amazing flavors together has made my salads so much more complex and exciting!

If you’ve been considering starting your own Gardyn, I highly recommend it! The variety, freshness, and incredible flavors are well worth it. Thinking about getting started? Check out my link here:
